Lichen and Niepokalanow

In Lichen there is the largest church in Poland, the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows, Queen of Poland. The church is located in the Marian sanctuary, an important Catholic religious center in the country. The building was built to commemorate the apparitions of Our Lady of Sorrows, Queen of Poland from 1813 and 1850-1852.

In the main altar of the smaller basilica in Lichen there is the Image of Our Lady of Lichen. In the central part of the Sanctuary stands a 25-meter-high stone mountain. Built on concrete and stones, Golgota is a labyrinth of passages, grottos, chapels, statues and bas-reliefs.

At the top of the 141.5-meter-high basilica tower there is an observation point. Thousands of pilgrims annually admire the panorama of the surrounding area and the entire Sanctuary. It stretches out over 35 km - towers of churches, alleys and roofs of the Lichen basilica, as well as forests, fields and surrounding lakes.

Grablinski Forest is an obligatory stop on the route of visiting Lichen is where memorable apparitions took place.

On our way back to Warsaw, we will stop in Niepokalanow to see the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Immaculate and St. Maksymilian Maria Kolbe. Before the outbreak of World War II, 760 monks lived in the monastery. During the war, it was a shelter for soldiers wounded in the September Campaign and for many other refugees. Inhabitants of the monastery were also affected by the warfare. Maksymilian Kolbe, arrested in February 1941 together with four other monks, died in the Auschwitz concentration camp half a year later.
Only a few of the pre-war buildings survived in Niepokalanow until today. Particularly noteworthy is the so-called old wooden chapel, considered the cradle of the monastery. The Franciscan Fathers Publishing House operates in the monastery. Today's Niepokalanow is an important pilgrimage center in central Poland.
